WRAPS—Helping Girls Stay in School

WRAPS--Helping Girls Stay in School
Picture
The Ethiopian government estimates that up to 90% of rural girls do not have access to clean sanitary pads. Many girls are missing up to four days of school each month due to this problem. By 7th and 8th grade many girls drop out of school because they have fallen so far behind in their studies.

In 2013, two teachers, Allison Karnes of N. Muskegon, Michigan, USA and Ingeborg Roth of Aalesund, Norway, teamed up to create WRAPS; a sanitary pad for the schoolgirls of Ethiopia. During the school year, they travel to the real middle schools and meet with 5-8th-grade girls teaching them about menstruation, feminine hygiene and how to take care of their new WRAPS.
A Simple Solution
WRAPS are Washable, Reusable, Affordable sanitary Pads.
WRAPS are made of 100% cotton cloth. Each school kit contains 6 pads, a new pair of panties, along with one small waterproof purse for the girls to carry their WRAPS to and from school.

Your contribution CAN make a life-changing difference!
100% of your tax deductible gift will be used for WRAPS.
WRAPS is a EFCA approved, 501(c)(3) ministry.

WRAPS are sewn in Soddo, Ethiopia. We currently employ 9 women and 1 translator in our factory at Wolaitta Village. TheWRAPS project is part of the greater NGO, Children’s Cross Connection (CCC). CCC oversees several orphanages in Soddo.

The Wolaitta Village project goals are to create sustainable businesses within the Wolaitta Community that will generate income for their children’s homes. Our dream is to offer free WRAPS kits to every middle school girl within the Wolaitta Zone of approximately 3 million people.

WRAPS utilizes a four-prong approach to help eliminate the inherent disadvantages that women face in Ethiopia.
  1. We educate girls about their menstrual period.
  2. Secondly, we encourage girls to stay in school and finish their education.
  3. Thirdly we are ecologically friendly by making a washable, reusable pad.
  4. Finally, it is our desire to create jobs for women and become a sustainable business that can exist without outside support.
