Sante Fe, New Mexico
The World’s Largest Folk Art Festival, featuring more then 150 Master Artists from 50 Countries
I’ve just returned from a whirlwind trip to Sante Fe, New Mexico, with my friend Debi, from college. I’ve dreamed of going back ever since our first trip 26 years ago. Our trip was strategically planned to coincide with the 15th Annual 2018 International Folk Art Market, July 13 - 15, 2018.
My passion is finding one-of-a-kind, unique treasures for Rapunzel’s. Over time, I’ve gone to the same venues, always yearning to find the ‘extra special’. I found just that at the Folk Art Market; unbelievable treasures, handmade by artisans from around the world! I stopped at every booth, chatted with the artisans about their work (who often had interpreters), and looked closely at every detail to find the right pieces to bring home to you.
And so it goes—lots of miles later, a treasured trip, meeting many talented craftspeople and their wares, with many stories shared by women of their own personal journey to the Market. I feel filled to the brim from the open-minded Sante Fe culture and inspired by a community that supports the arts 100%.
Stop by Rapunzel's. You'll find our new treasures tucked throughout the shop.
Learn More About the Market
In July 2004, 61 master folk artists from 36 countries ventured to this high-desert city to share in a then-untested proposition that creativity, prosperity and community well being could be realized through the art of the handmade. This July, that proposition—the International Folk Art Market Santa Fe—marks 15 years of art and impact as more than 150 folk artists from 53 countries gather at the world’s largest, most diverse folk art festival to celebrate cherished craft traditions and contribute to global unity and economic change.
The 2018 Market is an event the world’s art and culture lovers won’t want to miss as 39 first-time artists join 123 returning artists, and two countries never before represented at the Market—Azerbaijan, and Greece—step onto the global folk art stage. Twenty-eight artists will again provide Innovation Inspiration in a special exhibition area, translating traditional folk art materials and techniques into works of modern meaning. Collectively, these creators’ eye-dazzling forms, textures and designs—textiles, jewelry, beadwork, basketry, sculpture, ceramics, rugs, metalwork, clothing, home accessories and more—blur borders in colorful displays of cultural dignity, beauty, and hope.
A MODEL OF PARTNERSHIP
Since 2004, the Market’s model of community-based enterprise and collaboration has been bolstered by partnerships worldwide, including such respected global cultural leaders as UNESCO and the World Craft Council.
In 2018, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, will join the Market family as Honorary Co-Chair. Yunus, a Bangladeshi economist, founded Grameen Bank in 1983 with a philosophy that everyone is a natural entrepreneur. He has since provided more than $26 billion in collateral-free loans to nine million borrowers—more than 97 percent of them women.
In addition to the world’s folk artists, perhaps the most essential partner in the Market’s history has been the city of Santa Fe, a place rich in its own indigenous cultures and craft traditions and a history of cross-cultural exchange and commerce. Santa Fe’s vitality as an arts and culture destination has catalyzed the Market’s extraordinary volunteer base—drawing more than 6,700 volunteers from Santa Fe, throughout New Mexico, and beyond since 2004. In turn, the Santa Fe and statewide economy has benefited from some $2 million in state gross receipts taxes and fees since 2004.

In 2013, two teachers, Allison Karnes of N. Muskegon, Michigan, USA and Ingeborg Roth of Aalesund, Norway, teamed up to create WRAPS; a sanitary pad for the schoolgirls of Ethiopia. During the school year, they travel to the real middle schools and meet with 5-8th-grade girls teaching them about menstruation, feminine hygiene and how to take care of their new WRAPS.
WRAPS are Washable, Reusable, Affordable sanitary Pads.
WRAPS are made of 100% cotton cloth. Each school kit contains 6 pads, a new pair of panties, along with one small waterproof purse for the girls to carry their WRAPS to and from school.
Your contribution CAN make a life-changing difference!
100% of your tax deductible gift will be used for WRAPS.
WRAPS is a EFCA approved, 501(c)(3) ministry.
Rapunzel's Boutique is committed to supporting WRAPS by making a $5 donation for every $100 sale at our shop. Your purchases are helping to educate and inspire young girls to stay in school!
We have the power to affect change and help! I encourage everyone to 'take the challenge' and make a donation. Share our blog on your Facebook page through the link at the bottom and ask your friends to join us too!
The Wolaitta Village project goals are to create sustainable businesses within the Wolaitta Community that will generate income for their children’s homes. Our dream is to offer free WRAPS kits to every middle school girl within the Wolaitta Zone of approximately 3 million people.
WRAPS utilizes a four-prong approach to help eliminate the inherent disadvantages that women face in Ethiopia.
